Alisa and Joel’s Mario Cake

Alisa and Joel were recently married at the beautiful Loulu Palm Estate. They came to us with a very special vision for their cake, and we were more than happy to oblige with their Mario-themed wedding cake.

They wanted LOTS of detail for their tiered cake so we designed each tier to be a different scene from the video game. The bottom tier is the underwater level, with Mario swimming. The middle tier is the land level with Mario running, and the top tier is the sky level with Mario flying. Each tier was separated with warp pipe columns, and handmade gumpaste characters from the game – magic mushrooms, fire flowers, Bowser, Toad, Goomba and more!

For the cake topper we created a 3-D version of the brick castle with Mario (standing on a ? block) and Princess Peach standing in front of the castle, kissing.

In addition to their tiered cake, they also had two ? block cakes, with a super star and magic mushroom atop each.

Showering Heather

Last month, I had the privilege of throwing my sister Heather (also one of our sugar artist here at A Cake Life) a wedding shower to celebrate her upcoming nuptials.   We held the event at the Bonsai Restaurant + Lounge in Restaurant Row and used the same color scheme for her wedding: plum purple and silver grey.

We designed a special sweet treats dessert bar and buffet for guests to enjoy…and stay tuned as we will soon be offering this as a service from A Cake Life!

The sweets table included a:

  • Macaroon tower
  • Mochi brownies (colored to match wedding)
  • Chocolate chip cookies with milk shot
  • Chocolate covered strawberries
  • Chocolate covered rice krispy treats
  • Mini red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing
  • Strawberry cream cake shooters
  • Oreo macaroons
  • Purple plum fondant cake with confetti design (cake topper provided by Me+U)

Watanabe Floral’s Inaugural Wedding Expo

Earlier this month we participated in Watanabe Floral’s Inaugural Bridal Expo.  They invited various local wedding vendors and transformed their showroom into several gorgeous wedding vignettes.  The draping, lighting and florals really were exquisite.

One of the hot wedding trends for 2014 are woodlawn weddings (very natural and rustic) so we created a ‘Secret Garden’ inspired, simple 3-tier white fondant cake with gold rope bands and subtle fresh floral accents of bridal protea, pincushions and ferns.  The cake was placed atop a wood stump cake stand (from Event Essentials), and adorned with a ring of matching moss and foliage around the base.  And we offered our always-popular red velvet mini cupcakes with cream cheese icing for samples.

Teaming Up With the Hawaii Food Bank to Help Stop Hunger

As we near the 5th anniversary of our company opening, we’ve decided to “pay it forward” and mark this special occasion by teaming up with the Hawaii Foodbank to help stop hunger in Hawaii.  We will be holding a mini food drive – donations from everyone are welcome, but if you donate a minimum of 5 canned goods and wish to have a cake consult for your order, you will receive a FREE consultation ($25 value).  Or if you would like to pay the $25 consult fee, we will pass along your entire donation to the Hawaii Foodbank.

The Hawaii Foodbank plays a pivotal role in feeding Hawaii’s hungry. Last year, the nonprofit distributed 12.8 million pounds of food to help feed 183,500 different people in need statewide. A $10 donation alone enables the Hawaii Foodbank to distribute food for 25 meals. Celebrate our birthday with us by making a donation today!

The types of food that are most needed are non-perishable items: canned meats/tuna, canned meals (spaghetti, chili, beef stew), canned soups, canned vegetables and canned fruits.

Ihilani Wedding Experience

On Sunday, April 6, Hawaii Wedding Pros teamed up with the JW Marriott Ihilani Ko Olina and hosted The Wedding Experience – a wedding showcase and fashion show featuring elite vendors from around the island of Oahu.  Guests were invited to sample signature cuisine, meet local wedding vendors, view the latest wedding trends, dance the night away to live entertainment and visit stunning sites on-property.

Here’s a quick video of the event.

We were invited to participate, and teamed up with Su-V Expressions, Les Saisons, Bradley and Lily to create a tablescape and accompanying cake based on inspiration from these gorgeous gold Monique Lhullier gowns.

Inspiration

We created a 4-tier light pink, shimmery rose gold fondant cake, with an extra tall tier.  We drew inspiration from the ornate detail and cool textures of the dress and piped a gold floral lace design onto the cake, and accented with a small cascade of edible, all-handmade ivory and gold sugar roses.

Ihilani Wedding Experience Piping

As samples for guests, we served our Yellow Butter Cake with Fresh Strawberry Cream Cake Shooters.

We had a fabulous time getting to know some newly engaged couples, working with some local wedding vendors and touring the property – Ihilani is gorgeous and definitely has some great wedding venues!
