Anne Namba’s New Collections

Anne Namba1

Earlier this year, at an event sponsored by Pacific Edge Magazine, we met Anne Namba – fashion designer extraordinaire, and were so excited to learn that she loved our sweet treats.  Shortly after, we were invited to participate in the unveiling of her newest collection! Her theme for the show was Anything But Basic, Black & White, Tattoo, and Tempting Textures.  Before the event, we visited her design studio where she shared with us some of her amazing Kimonos, fabrics and many of her exquisitely crafted pieces.   As I was walking around her studio, I was immediately inspired to create a cake design based of one of the Kimono fabric dresses she was showing for the fashion show. I was immediately drawn to a beautiful red fabric dress that had these bright eye-catching gold and silver embroidered flowers and a very detailed crane flying amongst the flowers!  The red satin fabric was speckled with lots of gold flecks.  I was so thrilled to find an original Anne Namba dress that I would have the honor of designing a cake off of!

Inspiration

We created a 3-tier cake with a base of red fondant and flecks of gold.  Inspired by the cherry blossoms and cranes on Anne’s designs we created handmade sugar cherry blossoms and a crane, then hand-painted them with gold leaf.

We embossed each flower with texture and finished it with edible 24K gold leaf!

For our display, we set-up our cake, along with our Red Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese icing and Strawberry Cream Cake Shooters for guests to sample.  Everyone there was treated to a fashion show, showcasing Anne’s newest designs, and an opportunity to shop the new collection.

During high school, one of my jobs was working at Bakery Manoa, in the Manoa Marketplace.  It was also 3 doors down from Anne’s shop, and I can vividly remember walking by her window displays and seeing all her amazing dresses and designs.  It’s so neat to come full circle, 15 years later, and being able to work with her on the launch of her new collection.  It was definitely a night to remember!  Thank you Anne, and we are so grateful for the wonderful opportunity to work with you.

Naked Cakes

Recently we’ve been getting more requests for naked cakes, and we can see why it is such a unique trend!

photo 2

Naked cakes, or unfinished cakes as they are sometimes called, are basically cakes without frosting around the sides of the cake.  These kinds of cakes evoke a natural, organic, rustic feel and can really set the tone and influence the look of your wedding.

We believe that the fun part of naked cakes are the accents and toppings – from berries and fruit (even preserves) to fresh flowers and plants and herbs (like succulents, rosemary or lavender) to sweet toppings (like caramel, honey or chocolate ganash).  Just try to avoid sugar or gumpaste elements as they clash with the rustic design.  Add bunting, or a simple cake topper and voila – the possibilities are endless!

Ku’u Lei: Hawaiian Vintage Inspired Wedding

Photos courtesy of Bit of Ivory Photography

KuuLei1

Awhile back we were approached by Sara of Burnett’s Boards and Chelsea of Bit of Ivory Photography and Orchestrated Stylized Shoots to help with with the Ku’u Lei (My Beloved) Photo Shoot.  The theme for the shoot was a Victorian Downtown Abbey meets Hawaiian tropical vintage, we were very excited to create a cake fitting the theme!

KuuLei2We created a 3-tier gold sheen cake and pulled inspiration from both Victorian architecture and Hawaii quilting.  On the top and bottom tiers we used an etching technique to create Victorian-style columns.  For the middle tier we pulled inspiration from the pineapples on the wedding invitations and created a Hawaiian quilted pineapple pattern detail.  The bands between the tiers mimicked Victorian molding.  To accent the cake, we created all-edible sugar lily of the valley flowers, and seeded eucalyptus leaves (which were used in all the floral bouquets and arrangements).

The shoot took place at the ever-gorgeous Hawaii State Art Museum, and Sara (of Burnett’s Boards), her husband and friends served as models – something that Bit of Ivory requires, using real people for her shoots.  Shilhi of Passion Roots created some stunning floral designs – I’m especially in love with the boutonniere-turned-lei for the groom, and have never seen anything like it.  And these photos by Chelsea of Bit of Ivory Photogaphy are ah-mazing.

Radiant Orchid

RadiantOrchid1

According to Pantone, “The Color People,” the Color of the Year for 2014 is RADIANT ORCHID.  They say Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination.  It is an expressive, creative and embracing purple – one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.  A captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid emanates great joy, love and health.

We happen to LOVE the color selected as it’s not only a gorgeous color for weddings, but orchids are a huge part of the wedding culture in Hawaii.  We especially love using orchids – either fresh, or made out of sugar as they are beautiful accents for cakes.  Here are several cakes that we at A Cake Life have created in the Radiant Orchid color scheme.

What do you think – are you in LOVE with Radiant Orchid?

Another big project we did was for the Toyopet company anniversary.  Toyopet is the parent company of Toyota.  In April they brought in 1,000 employees from Japan for an anniversary party at the Sheraton Waikiki.  They commissioned us to create a huge display of 800 cupcakes, highlighting their company logo on each cupcake, and instructed us to “make it look like Cupcake Wars“- a HUGE display!
