Multi-Shaped Cakes

When most people think of a wedding cake – they usually think of a round, square or even hexagon tiered cake.  A round cake is very traditional and classic, while the square cake is more modern and contemporary.  The hexagon shape is a very unique design.

Cake shape is definitely a personal preference, but some cake designs can work better with certain shape.  A flower cascade (which can work on any shaped cake) seems to look best on a round cake as the cascade falls more naturally with the curve of the cake.  The square cake has distinct faces to each side, so the cascade would only be on the one front face, and the rest of the cake would be bare.

In addition to the three above mentioned cake shapes, there are also sculpted cakes.  Typically it’s cakes like birthday or grooms cakes that are sculpted – we’ve done cakes in the shape of cars, basketballs, shoes and states (we’ve done Texas and Alaska).  These are fun as it allows the baker to really get creative.

For a fun and memorable wedding cake design, it’s neat to mix and match your cake shapes – we’ve recently created several cakes where we used all 3 shapes – round, hexagon and square tiered cakes.  Although the thought of this could sound wacky to all you brides, you can definitely have it all!  Check out a few of our latest designs using all three shapes!  These cake designs were kept clean and simple but with small touches, flowers and of course the three different shapes add that visual appeal!

Miwako and Craig chose an all-ivory buttercream base with a matching color pearl trim border with small sugar blossoms on all tiers.  We added white cymbidium blooms around the tiers.  For their flavors they chose our Yellow Butter Cake with Lilikoi Cream filling and our Guava Cake with Guava Cream filling.

Cynthia and Wesley chose a simple all-white buttercream cake, with bamboo fondant décor around the base of each layer.  Green cymbidium blooms were placed strategically around the cake.  For their flavors they chose our Yellow Butter Cake with Lilikoi Cream filling and our Guava Cake with Strawberry Cream filling.

Stacy and Benmar’s wedding reception was FULL of color – bright fuchsia pink and cobalt blue with accents of crystals and peacock feathers.  But for her cake, she decided on a more muted design with an ivory buttercream base and border trimming of pink sugar pearls.  We added in the pop of color with her bright fuchsia pink shimmering sugar flower topper.  It was a sweet and cute set-up and her guests loved the different shapes as we were setting up.  The flavor they chose was our Yellow Butter Cake with Fresh Strawberry Cream filling and Devils Food Chocolate cake with Cookies N Cream filling.
